Part 517: Laager - Turn 13

Laager: Tactical Update 13

Kernoff winced as the silvery streak of a gauss rifle round glanced from the Legacy’s battered armor. It staggered at the blow but Nami kept her machine upright. Kernoff flipped to thermals almost automatically and frowned as her machine’s heat spiked. She’d lost some engine shielding with that shot—an extremely lucky one if her attacker had been the Demolisher still lurking outside the base’s walls.

The Snake, at least, had more pressing things to do than exacerbate the Viking’s plight. The sudden detonation of the Catapult had shaken the enemy pilot mid-jump. They’d come down precariously close to the edge of the `Mechbay’s roof. A kick or shove might’ve been enough to send that pilot over the edge, but half-blinded by the smoke rolling up her machine’s chest, Nami’s desultory attempt failed to connect. The Snake responded in kind but the pilot was more concerned about maintaining their machine’s balance than actually doing actual harm.

Kernoff shot it in the leg and was immediately rewarded with a gout of the green-tinted smoke that told him a myomer bundle had caught fire. The pilot jumped and ran, not quite crippled but damaged badly enough that few MechWarriors would risk continuing the fight. Most of the ComGuard machines were already well beyond that point—their stubborn refusal to surrender likely had the Capellan commander at wit’s end. Kernoff scoffed. They’d been fighting Free Worlders for too long.

Arakiel’s Viking rolled to its feet just as the red-shouldered Wolverine emerged from their `Mechbay. Kernoff didn’t doubt the techs had all run for the shelters. The Capellans would probably slaughter the lot of them, but they’d be spending infantry to do so rather than gunning the blessed Blake’s men down on open ground. The Wolverine’s torso-mounted lasers flickered and its SRMs battered away at the Viking’s heavy armor, but the dual large lasers in their pistol-like mounting along its right arm stayed quiet. A moment later the Wolverine’s intent became clear.

Arakiel’s kick was swift and brutal, but the clearly experienced Capellan pilot simply wasn’t there to take it. Most Mechwarriors would kick one another at point blank, but with few other options the Viking relied on doing so more than most. The Wolverine’s pilot had anticipated Arakiel’s attempt and was already stepping to the side by the time the Viking’s foot lashed forward. The Wolverine’s response was a one-two punch that would’ve been a credit to any heavyweight boxer in the Inner Sphere. The first glanced from the Viking’s blunt nose, but as Arakiel started to draw back the second struck her machine’s canopy, cracking the three-centimeter transplex in a spiderweb pattern. In Kernoff’s experience a strike like that was more than enough to turn a pilot into a rag doll for a few moments.

The Viking collapsed as its already unsteady pilot blacked out. Kernoff clasped the BattleMaster’s hands together like a prizefighter cracking his knuckles. His near-useless right arm raised with one finger extended in challenge. As though he intended to stab the Wolverine in the chest with it.
